A Premium Sauna Experience at New Heights

Gothenburg has gained a new iconic landmark: Karlatornet, Sweden's tallest building, which includes residential units and an exclusive hotel featuring a full-service spa. Tylö was hired to design, manufacture, and supply all components for the sauna rooms, including heaters, wall panels, interiors, lighting, and doors.
At the top of the tower, on floors 70 to 74, four exclusive penthouse apartments were built, each featuring a private sauna equipped with Tylö's elegant Crown heater. The interiors were designed with brushed, heat-treated aspen for walls, ceilings, and benches. The brushed wood surface creates a delicate texture that is enhanced by the lighting, adding depth and sophistication to the design. Each sauna features a large glass front offering panoramic views of the city—a supreme experience in Sweden's highest-located sauna rooms.
In addition to the penthouses, Tylö provided saunas for 20 apartments in Karlatornet. Each sauna room was custom-built in size, layout, and design to match the unique architecture of each home. The variation made the project more complex, but it also created a consistently exclusive look and feel in all homes. The saunas were delivered as loose materials (kit form), with panels, interiors, glass fronts, and heaters installed on-site.
Spa with Integrated IR Sauna
The hotel's spa area features two sauna rooms: a traditional dry sauna and a hybrid sauna with infrared panels seamlessly integrated into the walls. This unique blend of infrared and traditional heat provides both effective heating and a more energy-efficient sauna experience. The saunas were constructed at Tylö's factory in Halmstad, where they were carefully assembled for quality control before being reinstalled at Karlatornet with millimeter precision.
The spa's sauna rooms were designed by Tylö, based on architectural drawings from Semrén & Månsson. Tylö created all construction drawings and built the saunas with narrow-slatted interiors made from heat-treated aspen, giving the spaces a warm, luxurious, and modern feel. The door handles were custom-designed to reflect Karlatornet's iconic silhouette. Ambient lighting was created with tailor-made neon-style LED strips, seamlessly integrated into the walls and benches to provide an atmospheric, subtle glow.
A Close and Coordinated Collaboration
In total, 26 saunas were installed: 20 for residential units, four in the penthouses, and two in the hotel. The project was carried out in close collaboration with the general contractor Serneke and Bravida, who handled the installation of the heating systems. All deliveries were precisely scheduled and coordinated through a central logistics hub to meet the specific requirements of the Karlatornet site. The project was initiated in early 2023, with final deliveries completed during the summer of that same year. Tylö also had the chance to install the next-generation Crown heater in the penthouses—a model featuring integrated lighting and a sleek, modern design that reflects the silhouette of the tower itself. Karlatornet serves as a clear example of how Tylö provides custom sauna solutions for both private homes and commercial spaces—always with a strong emphasis on design, innovation, and exceptional quality.
